I was a little surprised by the conversation I'd with one of my cousins the other day. He's still in school. The discussion was on mobile phones, but it reflected the amount of consumerism in kids today.
"Congrats on your job, you treat's due." said my cousin.
"Thank you. You can have it anytime."
So how much are you getting?"
"Enough for my expenses and your treat" I replied looking up from my laptop and smiled.
He saw my phone lying on the table and said, " Hey you are earning now, it's high time you changed your cell phone."
"Why..what's wrong with this one? I'd got it last year."
" This is an outdated handset, you have to upgrade urself. You have to project a lifestyle, now that you are working. Why don't you get yourself a new phone?"
"Because I dont need one"
It was then, a friend updated on facebook, " Playing Angry Birds RIO on my new android phone"
I asked him what was all the fuss about android phones. He took out his high end 'android' phone.
I bought it six months back. It's got super cool apps. It's got awesome games. And most important, it's cool, he said.
He handed me his phone. "You should buy one", he said.
"But I don't play games.. and it's too expensive." I said while checking the mob.
"Then buy an iphone. You can pay in easy installments.Even I'm planning to buy one"
He then went on to explain me all the features of the phone for the next fifteen minutes like a trained salesman.
At the end of it, he seemed very happy with pitch."So, what have you decided?"
" My dear, the iphone seems nice. But I can't use half of the features and the rest half I don't need."
The disappointment was writ large upon his face. But he wasn't ready to give up yet.
" Alright, you wont buy one I know. But i'll let you use my android when I buy my iphone"
"You mean your dad buys you an iphone" I chuckled.
